Torrevieja and its surrounding area, including Orihuela, has become famous over the years for their salt production. The name Torrevieja is a compound of two spanish words, vieja meaning old, and torre meaning tower. The name comes from a popular old tower which once stood on the harbor, and it became a popular name for the destination around 1800 when it took over the salt administration from Orihuela.
